Week 2 | Authenticated - How God Helps us to Discern Authentic Ministry

How can we discern whether a pastor or ministry leader is truly faithful to God?

In 1 Thessalonians 2:1–6, Paul points to his own ministry among the Thessalonians and shows that authentic ministry is not proven by popularity, praise, persuasive speech, or outward success. God tests, refines, and approves those He entrusts with the gospel.

Through trials, God refines and authenticates leaders for His ministry.

Paul and his companions had experienced suffering and opposition, yet they continued to boldly proclaim the gospel. Their trials did not disqualify their ministry. God used those trials as part of His sanctifying work, refining their hearts and revealing the authenticity of their calling.

In today’s message, Pastor Ryan Rice, Sr. walks through several marks that help us recognize authentic, God-approved ministry:

1️⃣ God Uses Suffering to Sanctify

Trials and opposition can become tools in God’s hands, exposing motives, developing character, and teaching His servants to depend more deeply on Him.

2️⃣ God Authenticates Leaders as They Submit to His Sanctifying Work

Paul understood that he had been tested and entrusted with the gospel. Authentic ministry flows from seeking to please the God who examines our hearts rather than trying to win the approval of people.

3️⃣ God Refines the Heart Through Experience

Ultimately, God validates a leader by refining their heart through the fire of experience. Faithfulness is revealed not simply by what someone says publicly, but by the motives and character behind their ministry.

🔎 How can we discern authentic and entrusted pastors or ministry leaders?

• Avoid greedy leaders. Ministry should never become a disguise for personal gain.

• Avoid preachers who primarily use rhetorical flattery. Faithful ministry proclaims truth rather than manipulating people with persuasive words.

• Avoid people-pleasers. Authentic leaders seek God's approval above human approval.

• Avoid praise seekers. Gospel ministry is about the glory of Christ, not building the reputation of the messenger.
