Why does heaven celebrate?

In Luke 15, Jesus tells one of the most beloved parables in all of Scripture. The story of the prodigal son is ultimately a story about a gracious Father who welcomes sinners home. Through this parable, Jesus answers the criticism of the religious leaders and reveals the heart of God toward the lost.

In this message, Pastor Ryan walks through Luke 15:11–32 and shows us the devastating effects of sin, the beauty of true repentance, and the overwhelming compassion of our Heavenly Father.

This week’s message highlights five important truths:

1️⃣ A Son Who Rejects His Father

The younger son demands his inheritance, leaves home, and pursues a life of rebellion. His journey reminds us that sin promises freedom but ultimately leads to bondage, brokenness, and separation from God.

2️⃣ A Son Who Comes to His Senses

At his lowest point, the son recognizes the emptiness of his choices and remembers the goodness of his father. Repentance begins when we see sin for what it truly is and turn back to God.

3️⃣ A Father Who Welcomes and Restores

Rather than rejecting his wayward son, the father runs to him, embraces him, and restores him. This is a picture of God’s mercy toward all who repent and trust in Christ.

4️⃣ A Brother Who Doesn’t Understand Grace

The older brother struggles to celebrate the restoration of his sibling. His response mirrors the attitude of the religious leaders who failed to understand God’s heart for sinners.

5️⃣ A Celebration Worth Joining

Heaven rejoices when even one sinner repents. As followers of Christ, we are called to celebrate the grace of God at work in the lives of others.

Jesus welcomes sinners, for He came to seek and save the lost and bring them to the Father. Heaven rejoices when even one sinner repents, and we are called to rejoice as well.

Whether you identify more with the younger son, the older brother, or somewhere in between, this message points us to the Father whose arms remain open to all who come home through Jesus Christ.

Have you been running from God, or struggling to celebrate His grace in the lives of others? What would it look like to embrace the Father's heart today?
